Recently, I had the honor of attending a very memorable event. I was invited to be the guest speaker to the now fifth form students of my alma mater. It was a privilege to not only be amongst past teachers and interact with this generation but also to give back to the establishment that shaped me in so many ways.
We can all agree that the children are the future, so I was more than happy and willing to be able to help build them in whichever little way God planned on using me to that day. However, it was quite amusing to me that something so simple and often taken for granted was what made this event memorable to me.
You see, at the start of the ceremony my former teacher said the Lord’s Prayer. As expected, everyone in the audience including myself joined in word for word. She then said a personal prayer and I silently stood in agreement. However, what took me by complete surprise was when she ended with the school’s prayer. Now, this was not something I had heard nor recited in over a decade, so my plan was to sit silently as everyone else prayed. However, as fast as these words poured out of my fifth form teacher’s mouth, so to did they follow from mine. My head was bowed and eyes closed so I was not reading anyone’s lips, yet for some reason I was still able to say the entire prayer.
Now, some of you may be thinking, “okay, you remembered a prayer, big deal?!”
But, let’s be real here, how many of you can honestly say you remember your entire school’s prayer? I know, I know, some of us may have to think a little further back than others. But, do you actually remember your school’s prayer in its entirety? Maybe just a few words, right? In fact, some of you are wondering if your school even had a specific school prayer. I know I definitely forgot that we did.
So, “how then was I able to utter every single word as though I had been saying it daily?” is what I repeatedly asked myself. How?
And that question also got me thinking…
How many things are there buried within me that I have either overlooked, taken for granted or altogether forgotten about?
How many gifts are there possibly stored up within me that, if remembered, could be used to help me become a better version of myself?
Like the memory of my school prayer, how many dreams have we all buried deep within? How many secret desires have we kept inside? How much potential is there hidden within us that just need a spark to be brought back to life?
Like my sweet nostalgia of a prayer, today’s blog post is entitled Remember Me?
One of my favorite authors and motivational speakers Myles Munroe once said, “The wealthiest place in the world is not the gold mines of South America or the oil fields of Iraq or Iran. They are not the diamond mines of South Africa or the banks of the world. The wealthiest place on the planet is just down the road. It is the cemetery. There lie buried companies that were never started, inventions that were never made, bestselling books that were never written, and masterpieces that were never painted. In the cemetery is buried the greatest treasure of untapped potential.” And I’d like to add to that by saying, that at this very moment, for many reading right now, there are a lot of untouched possibilities and dreams buried within our living bodies.
You see, sometimes an idea comes to us, a great one might I add but because fear whispers that we’ll mess this up again we toss it to the back of our minds, never to go after again. Then, one day while we’re living life, we come across someone else – someone we know or not – who took that very same idea and brought it to life and we say to ourselves “Wow, I always said I would do that.” We even take a step further and ask ourselves, “How did she get that job? I would have been great at that. I always wanted to do that.” But you didn’t.
Let’s be honest with ourselves, if we look around, how many businesses have you seen established lately that made you confess to yourself, “I always wanted to do that.” Or, how many vacation albums from friends on social media made you say, “I’ve always wanted to go there.” But you didn’t.
How many times have you met someone with a job title that you once wished for, doing a course that you once desired to pursue, or with a car, a house or even family life that you knew you always wished for? How many things have you buried inside as ‘to-do” and only when you see it in the flesh, or see someone else living those dreams, YOUR dreams, do you realize “Wow that could have been me?”
Or if we’re being brutally honest with ourselves, how many of us had big dreams for ourselves UNTIL we met our current spouse? That’s a tricky one I know. But sadly, a lot of times we become just like the people we surround ourselves with and we can either end up losing ourselves while fighting to help the other party pursue their own dreams or no dreams at all, because their spirit of laziness, procrastination or mixed up priorities has rubbed off on us. It happens.
How many of us have been guilty of all of these: shoulda’, coulda’, woulda’ but you didn’t moments.
Similarly, because you’ve been hurt before, by things or people that made you feel too ashamed to tell, you’re guilty of digging a deep hole within to hide your pain. You then continue life with a huge smile on your face, never truly dealing with the matter, almost forgetting all about it. However, just like old injury wounds that have been accidently touched, so too have your pains been reawakened when someone tries to get to know you better. Has that ever happened to you? Or when you’ve been tested, and a different version of you comes out, you realize, “Wow, I really never dealt with these issues.” Or, “I never realized how much it affected me until now.”
How many things -within our living bodies – are there screaming, do you remember me?
Do yourself a favor today by taking back those ideas, those dreams, those desires and seeing it through before it’s too late. Do not wait for a trigger to build yourself up. Do not wait for someone else to step in to forcible remind you of your past ghosts.
Unlike someone else starting off the prayer that triggered my memory, we aren’t always lucky enough to have someone start accomplishing our dreams for us. That’s not how life works. There aren’t going to be people who will search our minds and pick out those things that only we know about and bring it to light. We do, however, have a God who wants us to delight in Him and “He will give you the desires of your heart.” – Psalm 37:4. So today ask God for renewal of mind to help you re-discover all of the things you once dreamt about doing, becoming and achieving but you forgot about. All of the things you’ve always pictured for your life, before well, life happened and He will surely be that person for you.
You see, adult-ing is hard. People can be draining. And all responsibilities are good at is building up. So, I get it. You were once a dreamer, a believer and an ambitious soul but then life took its course. Now, you have no idea how you ended this far down the rabbit hole. In fact, you have no idea how the years have gone by so quickly. How in the world are we already on the second half of 2018 – with so many dreams still unaccomplished? But that’s ok. There is no greater time than NOW.
There is no greater time than now to start writing down those steps, build up the courage and take advantage of the moment by triggering your own memory in pursuit of the true desires of your heart. Though it may have taken you too many years to get to, I promise when you do go after your dreams the time wasted wouldn’t matter. In fact, you’d feel as proud as I was saying that prayer as though I was indeed the fifth form student at the school.
My advice today is: There is no greater time than now, to reignite your own memory and tap into your tossed away potential in order to make the rest of your life a memorable event.
A lot of times we stand in our own way. You know to yourself that you’ve always wanted to become a pastry chef but because you have no idea where you’d get the money to even buy ingredients you toss the idea to the back of your mind. When you first started that job you knew that the intention was never to stay long term but then you started having debt so earning the pay cheques became priority and so you tossed your real dreams to the back. You also knew that you wanted to go back to school but because the timing seemed impossible you’ve tossed that to the back too. Before you know it you’ve become your own mortuary storing dead ideas and desires never to be brought back to life.
Then sometimes, Gods sends us favor but because we aren’t on a positive vibration to receive, we miss out. Like a prayer we’re forced to recite at school, we underestimate and never take the time to see the blessings in the people, opportunities and ideas God sends our way. Today I urge you to not allow yourself to miss your next blessing by breaking that cycle today. Like my school prayer, I do not want 10+ years to pass you by before you realize that some things are a blessing in disguise and had you taken advantage of it back then, you could have been further along your path already. Last week I didn’t recite that prayer. Instead, with head bowed, eyes closed, a huge smile on my face, tears in my eyes, and beaming pride, I lustily offered up every single word of that prayer to God as I realized how powerful it was and acknowledged that it was possibly because of this prayer and many others, I have been blessed and protected for so many years. There is power in the spoken word and I had not realized until then the words I had been saying.
Today there are a lot of things that you have not realized have been holding you back. And also a lot of things that you tossed away, that could take you to the next chapter of your life. Do not wait until it’s too late to realize that you have all that it takes to becomes the YOU God created you to be. (Repetition of You’s there I know) But read it again, it’s true.
You do have what it takes to achieve that dream job, to fulfill that passion project, to take that plane ride or even to confess your true feelings to that someone. [You weren’t expecting that one right? But it’s been hidden within you too, so why not express your love to him or her?]
Your true love may be right under your nose, your next job opportunity may be very close and instead of looking so far, finding out your true purpose may be hidden right within the simple things you are called to do right now. Do not underestimate your present season. God is calling you to dream big. Do not do yourself an injustice by continuing life with all that buried potential. We’ve tossed ideas to the back of our minds for way too long with empty promises of returning to them then we forget. Today, find a quiet moment to listen to all of the things that are whispering, remember me?
